Death of Capitalism

by Lee Allen Martin

Monday, September 17, 2001 10:54 PM

Today our government by and through the Federal Reserve took to purchase the means to make profit on the stock exchange. These funds were the direct product of the American Taxpayer. It matters not the intention of the Federal Reserve. What does matter is that the government is acquiring more and more of the means to make profit. Government control of industry is COMMUNISM. Is that simple enough? It was not long ago that many of you out there was exposing the values of the free market and capitalism. Where are you?

I ask what does the taxpayer receive for the risk that we have taken to make sure that major brokers do not go broke? Is it our governments duty to make sure that free markets react as told? If it is it isn't capitalism.

Now let us add the other big breaking economic news of today. Bail out of the Airlines! In capitalism just as the company, business person, or entrepreneur has a right to a profit for a better mouse trap they also have the right to fail just like the buggy whip manufacturers. Poor business practices means you go out of business. If you are a transportation company and you cannot protect your customer you go broke. It does not matter if it is airlines, buses, or trains. It really isn't the governments job to make sure that these forms of transportation are safe. The airlines have not been filling seats prior to last Tuesday, and were in serious problems. Some of it is that the economy did not support air travel. Some is that the Internet provided the needed communications without leaving on a jet plane. Some of it was the lazy security that was provided by the airlines. The airlines had a much greater duty to protect their customers than the government had to protect their citizens. They failed they lose.

The problem with bailing out industry, corporate welfare, is the way it is applied. Who gets it? Not everyone and everyone who has went broke in a business knows that they deserve it. This is discrimination in the worst form, and the excuse that we need them is silly. New business will take their place. The infrastructure is not gone and will continued to be used by someone. The airplanes will be bought and used. The flights will continue to be made available if economically profitable.

I do not fly, and do not want to. Why should I support airlines? Why should my government make sure that the public has the right to fly when they do not provide this right to the public to drive on the highway. This is not a right, or privilege, it is business in the free market. As such when the consumer does not want to pay you, you go Broke.

Where are you Capitalist? Tell your congress person now or get used to being called "pink!"
